I'm thinking about it, and I don't mean all carbs or anything too drastic, just the refined stuff. I'd still have fruit, honey, molasses and real maple I think. I've been working out consistently for 10 weeks now and I'm enjoying my new energy, and some visible muscles in my arms, but the number on the scale hasn't budged. The Nelsons are getting together on my brother Brad's houseboat in the middle of June, and I think I'll cut sugar out till then... can I do it? Have you done it?

My friend Emily swears by a no sugar diet. I hope it goes well for you. I have thought about trying it and I just can't bring myself to do it. Once I say I will give it up all I want is a twix bar, and the urge grows until I eat enough candy to fill a pillowcase.
Maybe it would help. But it takes awhile to see results on the scale when you start working out. Muscles cells are a LOT smaller than fat cells and weigh the same. Some times you even see weight gain when starting an exercise program. I usually recommend to people that they take some starting measurements (bust, waist, hip, thigh) and remeasure once a every week or two. You will usually see a decrease in inches before a drop on the scale. Have you noticed your clothes fitting different?
All your increased energy is a good sign that the process is working. Increased muscle mass
leads to an increased metabolic rate which leads to more energy. Cutting back sugar may help, but I don't know that it will drastically change your results. Usually the stricter you make the diet, the bigger the chance of blowing it. I would recommend watching portion sizes for all your meals rather than cutting out foods. Most of us eat almost double the portion size we need. Also watch out for snacking after dinner, a lot of us do it just out of boredom.
I have recently quit eating all sugar or sweetners and it is hard for the first week but then your body adjusts. I feel much better when I don't eat sugar. I have a lot more energy and I am not as grumpy with my kids. Go for it. It doesn't hurt to try. I have also lost 20 pounds since cutting out sugar.
I'm aiming to lose 25 lbs. I already track my food, and my portions aren't out of control, but I do spend more calories on sugar than I should, and I don't eat enough protein. We've (meaning me and the kids, Doug is his own creature) also been trying to eat a "rainbow" each day and I've liked the difference there. Just trying something new. I don't feel scared of saying goodbye to the junk, I actually feel liberated by the choice. I made a bad batch of cinnamon rolls and felt sick for 3 days afterward, so I think that's what did me in with sugar. I'll report progress.
I did it for 5 months- I cut out white flour, white rice and white sugar. I did it when I was single though and have found it difficult with a family. I really think that combinded with your eating the rainbow is the healthiest way to live! I think I lost 35 lbs in those 5 months- without weighing, measuring, or counting food. You can do it!
I did it for a year. It got really easy...then when I did start eating sugar again it was WAY too sweet and overboard for me. Now I have weened my way back to my sugar happy self. :) It was a nice year though! I felt very internally healthy!
We've had some refined sugars cut out for a while here. I am surprised how much of a health nut I am becoming. HFCS is a big contributor also, unfortunately. At Earthfare.com you can read some interesting articles on it. I still bake and use sugar, but mostly try to use honey, mollasses, maple syrup and am looking for a inexpensive way to buy Sucanat, unrefined sugar in granulated form. We tried Kale and Parsnips this week, both quite successfully. I must say, I am happy my family has so many fresh veges and fruits in their diets. (Now if I could just follow as well ;))

Sherrie, you can do ANYthing. I am convinced of that. You've done lots of things that are WAY harder than not eating sugar.

Sounds like you've got some good support going for you! Dad & I gave up soda pop & desserts (mostly) & white bread too. Of course, he's losing faster than I am. I can't wait to see you in a month!
